Christchurch’s Central Art Gallery is marking its fifth anniversary in the city centre with a group show of artists that have played a role in its history.

Central co-director Jonathan Smart said the show, called Celebrating 5 Years, would feature work from various artists including Bing Dawe, Neil Dawson, Hannah Kidd, Lonnie Hutchinson, Dick Frizzell, and Reuben Paterson.

He said the gallery was founded as a way to bring art to the city centre and had weathered the pandemic storms to bring new and established artists to their Christchurch Arts Centre venue for five years.

“It was a vision of a gallery that offers contemporary art in the centre of the city close to the museum and the tourist precinct and that has been sustained by what we’ve done,’’ he said.
